“Redefining Sarcoma Surgery – A Life Restored by Dr. Lokesh Garg’s Expertise!”, A case of Pelvic Sarcoma
Successful Surgical Removal of a Massive Pelvic Bone Sarcoma by Dr. Lokesh Garg
When it comes to complex orthopedic surgeries, experience and expertise make all the difference. One such remarkable case was recently handled by Dr. Lokesh Garg, the best Orthopaedic Surgeon in Gurgaon, who successfully performed a highly intricate surgery for a patient suffering from pelvic bone sarcoma. This patient, an international visitor, sought world-class medical care and found their best hope in Dr. Garg.
A Rare and Challenging Case of pelvic sarcoma
The patient, an 18-year-old boy, was diagnosed with a case of synovial sarcoma of the pelvis, extending from the acetabulum to the mid-thigh medial compartment. The patient initially received chemotherapy before surgery and was then referred to us for surgical intervention. Following the surgery, radiation therapy was administered to help control local recurrence and improve long-term outcomes. The tumor was massive, measuring more than 25 cm in size, and required an aggressive surgical approach due to its complex location and involvement.
The Surgical Excellence
Dr. Lokesh Garg and his expert team executed an en-bloc resection of the tumor, ensuring complete removal of the malignant mass. This involved the excision of Type 3 + Type 2 pelvic bone segments along with the medial thigh compartment, all in one single piece. The challenge was not only in removing the tumor safely but also in reconstructing the hip joint to ensure future mobility and functionality.
To restore stability and function, Dr. Garg reconstructed the hip joint using prolene mesh, which has proven to be a very effective, cost-efficient, and functionally superior technique. Unlike 3D-printed implants, which may have limited long-term survival due to the loss of muscle and bone stock after tumor resection, pseudoarthrosis with mesh provides both stability and mobility at a significantly lower cost. Given the high stress and mobility of the hip joint, an implant may not last indefinitely, and revision surgery in the future would be extremely challenging due to extensive fibrosis following radiation therapy. Reconstructing hip Joint with mesh, a highly specialized technique that allows for optimal recovery while preserving movement.
An Extraordinary Recovery
Thanks to Dr. Lokesh Garg’s meticulous approach and surgical expertise, the patient has made a remarkable recovery. Despite the extensive nature of the surgery, the patient is now walking normally without any functional deficit. This outcome underscores the proficiency of Dr. Garg in handling even the most complicated bone and soft tissue sarcoma cases.
